ÅSE FRØYSHOV: PRISMATIC PERCEPTIONS IN TAPESTRY
In the spring of 1996, Norwegian artist Åse Frøyshov opened ”Themes of Earth”, an exhibition of her stunning, large-scale tapestries, at Art 54, located in Soho on the corner of Broome and Greene Streets in New York.
For the second time in three years, the bright, street-level gallery engaged the Soho art audience with several tapestries from the loom of this internationally acclaimed artist. ”Themes of Love”, Frøyshov’s 1993 exhibition at Art 54, observed the exalted phases of intimacy through the keen, prismatic point of view that distinguishes her work in Scandinavia and throughout Europe; ”Themes of Earth”, accompanied by a magnificently produced full-color catalog, visits a new range of ideas, but with the same penetration of color and form. Both exhibitions add fresh momentum to today’s exiting renaissance to contemporary tapestry.
Frøyshov further expands the medium’s expressive range by setting forth powerful correlation between content and technique.

THE DYNAMIC MONUMENTAL TAPESTRIES OF ÅSE FRØYSHOV
Dynamic forms, large scale, and a masterly control of color, as well as a sense of drama combine to emphasize this artist’s competence in her chosen medium. Declaration of Love is a particularly splendid weaving. Reds, blues, greens and magenta forms abut in powerful and sensual combinations that convey kinetic warmth and energy. A fair Vision is another spectacular oeuvre, completed on one of the artist’s huge looms. The movement of the free-form contours and opulent colors creates a visual excitement in these abstract and decorative examples and the tapestry art.

ÅSE FRØYSHOV ELEVATES THE ART OF TAPESTRY
Froyshov approaches her medium in much the same way that artists such as Jack Youngerman approach painting. For Froyshov, tapestry is a means for creating powerful statements of pure color and form. Her works executed on the monumental scale of contemporary painting and has a visual impact to mach that of any abstract painter.
Froyshov displays a coloristic and compositional authority that would be remarkable in any medium. Indeed, her tapestries have an impact reminiscent of the huge paper cutouts that were the crowning achivement of Matisse’s career. At the same time, Froyshov is ever mindful of those unique textural qualities that make tapestries so special in their own right.
Anyone who has ever doubted that fabric art can be an important medium for making ambitious creative statements will surely be disabused of such notions after viewing this exhibition. Suffice is to say that Ase Frøyshov is a major artist who elevates her medium to the highest plateau, making distinctions between art and craft irrelevant in process. Bravo!
